Healthy Chocolate Coffee Protein Smoothie

This high protein, high fiber smoothie is the perfect morning or afternoon drink to keep you fueled for your day. I used a vegan, unflavored protein powder in this smoothie that is pretty clean, I think, and it came out delicious! To lower your calories you can skip the maple syrup. This drink is super quick to throw together and you probably already have the ingredients – banana, cocoa powder, or cacao powder, cinnamon, almond butter… yum!

Read below for the health benefits of cacao powder and cinnamon!

Benefits of Cacao Powder

Derived from the cacao bean, cacao powder offers several potential health benefits when consumed in moderation as part of a balanced diet. Here are some of the benefits associated with cacao powder:

  1. High in Antioxidants: Cacao powder is rich in antioxidants, particularly flavonoids. Antioxidants help neutralize free radicals in the body, reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, which can contribute to various chronic diseases.
  2. Mood Enhancement: Cacao contains certain compounds that may promote the production of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, endorphins, and phenylethylamine. These chemicals can help improve mood, promote feelings of happiness, and potentially alleviate symptoms of mild depression and anxiety.
  3. Cardiovascular Health: The flavonoids found in cacao have been associated with cardiovascular benefits. They may help lower blood pressure, improve blood flow, reduce inflammation, and enhance overall heart health. Regular consumption of cacao has been linked to a reduced risk of heart disease.
  4. Cognitive Function: Cacao contains substances that may enhance cognitive function and support brain health. Some studies suggest that the flavonoids in cacao may improve cognitive performance, attention, and memory. Additionally, the presence of theobromine, a natural stimulant, may provide a mild cognitive boost.
  5. Nutrient-Rich: Cacao powder is a good source of several essential minerals, including magnesium, iron, potassium, and zinc. These minerals are important for various bodily functions, such as energy production, muscle function, and immune system support.
  6. Potential Anti-Inflammatory Effects: Some studies indicate that the flavonoids in cacao may have anti-inflammatory properties, which could help reduce inflammation in the body. Chronic inflammation is associated with various health conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.
  7. Skin Health: The antioxidants in cacao powder may help protect the skin against damage caused by free radicals and oxidative stress. Additionally, the flavonoids may improve blood flow to the skin and promote a healthier complexion.

Benefits of Cinnamon

  1. Antioxidant-rich: Cinnamon is packed with antioxidants that help protect the body against oxidative stress caused by free radicals. Antioxidants can help reduce inflammation, support the immune system, and potentially lower the risk of chronic diseases.
  2. Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Cinnamon contains compounds with anti-inflammatory properties, such as cinnamaldehyde. These compounds may help reduce inflammation in the body, which is linked to various health conditions, including heart disease, cancer, and neurodegenerative disorders.
  3. Blood Sugar Regulation: Cinnamon has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity and help regulate blood sugar levels. It can potentially enhance the uptake of glucose by cells, improving blood sugar control. This benefit may be particularly relevant for individuals with type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance.
  4. Heart Health: Cinnamon may contribute to heart health by helping to lower blood pressure and reduce cholesterol levels. Some studies suggest that cinnamon can help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglyceride levels while increasing HDL (good) cholesterol, which is beneficial for cardiovascular health.
  5. Antimicrobial Properties: Cinnamon has natural antimicrobial properties and can inhibit the growth of certain bacteria, fungi, and viruses. It has been traditionally used as a natural food preservative and for its potential antimicrobial effects in the body.
  6. Digestive Health: Cinnamon is known to aid in digestion by stimulating the production of digestive enzymes and reducing gastrointestinal discomfort. It may help relieve indigestion, bloating, and gas.
  7. Cognitive Function: Some research suggests that cinnamon may have positive effects on cognitive function, including memory and attention. It may also help improve brain health by protecting against age-related neurodegenerative diseases.
